Roaming Loudoun County

Roaming the Planet, a blog featuring day trips in the DC metro area, has featured us on their blog. Here is an excerpt from their blog, please be sure to go to Roaming Planet for their full writeup.

"Everyday the owners of Old Lucketts Store strive to bring you cool stuff at great prices, arranged in rooms that are fresh and full and ready to knock your socks off. But on the first weekend of every month, they take it way over the top with their Design House event.

Entry is made through a breezeway at the back of the property, where you’ll emerge in a courtyard that immediately tells you you’re in for a world of fun. Step up into the house where breakfast pastries by Peace of Cake often await, along with cups of steaming hot coffee.

When I walked in, I immediately bumped into owners Suzanne Eblen and Amy Whyte, the creators of this place where old meets new and everything is reinvented in the process. They’ve coordinated room after room down to the finest detail and you’re left with the feeling that it’s absolutely fabulous and you must have it all.

Eblen explains that their ultimate goal is to make living spaces that come together through passion, synergy and a huge dose of humor. The two have an interesting approach to designing their highly-thematic and subtly entertaining rooms: They concoct a detailed story for each one. A recent favorite was the evil stepsister room, with twin beds strewn akimbo and decorating touches that defied both conformity and peaceful coexistence.

The ultimate goal of Design House, in Eblin’s words, is to create a place where you can “Come in, have fun and be happy.” So when a customer recently admitted that she visited every month just to make herself feel good, Eblen was delighted. Mission accomplished!"

A Timely mention

We were super-psyched last week when we got a call from a woman in New York who tipped us off that one of our finds had made it to a farm outside Pittsburgh, PA, and then all the way into the front page article in the New York Times Home section on Thursday, June 9th!

The article was called The Decorated Shed, and it featured the story of a couple who bought a farm in Pennsylvania as a weekend retreat.  After many years of growing crops and donating them to local food banks, they decided it was time to redecorate the farm (that's where we come in).  Designer Lisa Dagnal purchased one of our marble side tables at our shop in Virginia and decorated Esther Dormer's bedroom.  A scan of the front page of the article and of our mention (see caption for picture #6) are shown below.

This article was featured on the front cover of the New York Times Home section on June 9th, 2011.

I know you probably can't read it, but the picture on the bottom right is a picture of our marble top table's new home.  The caption reads "the marble-top side table is from the Old Lucketts Store in Leesburg, VA".
A special thank you shout out to my sister Amy and her other half, Dave, for running out to the newsstand in the pouring rain and snapping up a copy and mailing it to me the next day!  <3

Fox 5 at Lucketts

n043

Wow! What a morning! There's always something going on at Lucketts...but this morning took that to a whole new level!  I got to the shop early to work on my "space", and a truck driver with a trailer arrived.  He was delivering a load that Suzanne bought at auction and he said he was told to be here by 9:15 for the tv shoot.  "What tv shoot?!!" It was 8:45 and no one was around but me!  Fox 5 was coming to Lucketts to film a live spot on the Lucketts Fair, and they were going to interview Suzanne about antiques.  I started to panic because I had just thrown my hair into a ponytail, no makeup - and if Sooz didn't show I did NOT want to do this interview!!  Luckily, she arrived shortly after, and Henry and the guys started unloading the trailer.  Anne, one of our awesome worker girls started artfully arranging the furniture to look "un-arranged".

Now for most,  that would be enough chaos for one morning but in addition to that we had the firemen collecting for muscular dystrophy, a road crew trimming trees and chipping them, police and community center board members.  We had to ask the road crew to stop work for the broadcast because the noise was unbearable!  In true Lucketts style, the whole staff pitched in and got the job done.  Suzanne is sponsoring an exchange student, Kabir, from India and he pitched in, too.  Welcome to our crazy corner of the world, Kabir!

Suzanne did a fantastic job in the interview...cool as a cucumber!  My favorite moment was when Holly Morris, the Fox 5 reporter asked Sooz where she buys her antiques, and Suzanne replied, "If I told you, I'd have to kill you".  Hilarious! Five minutes after the piece aired, the pink chairs sold by phone to someone who had seen the report.  Just another day at Lucketts....
